EDIT :Changed the height of the African lion, he was just WAY too small in the first upload. I think I'm a bit happier with him in this edited version.

Just a pic showcasing the possible size differences of an American Lion (now extinct) and a modern day African Lion.

There's been alot of speculation on the over all appearance of the American lion. Did it have a mane or not? What was it's pelt like? Was it even considered (by today's species charts) a lion at all?

As for me, I( hope it had a full mane like today's lions, why? because I think it would be awesome to have basically a super sized lion of today. 8)

Well we may never know. And as far as a specific height goes? I may be a bit off on this image. The reffs I looked up all had different heights, So I just "guesstimated".

(I am in serious need of some sleep 0.0)

ANYWHO!!

ENJOY!!

It'd be interesting if scientists could bring back the North American Lion. They'd probably become way more popular than the African Lion. Especially because of the size and the differences on their looks. Imagine a liger formed with an American lion plus an Asian Tiger? It'd be incredibly huge.

have you ever been to the San Diego Zoo? they have this exhibit called Elephant Odyssey, and it is the most gorgeous exhibit i've ever seen. they have statues of life size extinct north american animals. they have signs comparing the african versions with the north american versions. they have this pit that slowly ebbs dark water away and inside are the skeletons of these extinct animals and you have to try to match them with the right animal. its so awesome.

anyway, since you seem really interested in that, i highly recommend it =D

yeah its really incredible. the spotted hyena exhibit is really bare and medicinal. but they have striped hyenas too, which is really cool. Elephant Odyssey is the best exhibit i have ever seen in the entire world (i work in a zoo, and ive seen plentyyy of zoos...but Elephant Odyssey blows my mind, just thinking about it). let me know what you think, if you go!

It's actually not really clear as to how the american lion became extinct. They were around at the time of the sabertoothed cats and wooly mammoths. So there's a number of theories on how they died out. man ofcourse being one of them, but we can never really know for sure.

An American lion? that would be awesome if American Lions were not extinct. Awesome drawing and i love the expressions they are giving each other.
