The taxidermy specimen are usually what people go by in terms of actually coloring them, but when you compare these two images :

you'll find that the black and white image's thylacines coats have more to them than the taxidermy specimen.
Theory is that in the case of taxadermy, pigments in the fur fade and die with time due to the conditions of the body, and the light it is put under.
I have found a few skinned pelts that show off more of a multi colored coat as well, some better than others.
Also it helps to see colored oil paintings/drawings done by artists who saw the animal firsthand, right infront of them. So look for art that was painted around the time the animal was still around.
So again, I may play up the color a bit for my original characters, but I have found that in quite a few cases, my designs are pretty similar to how they may have actually looked.
Hope this helped
The last I heard was that the last one died in captivity inthe 19-somethings XD
I'm also one of those cryptid lovers that dreams they are still out there.
I hate humans and how we kill everything. -_-
I like to think that one day they'll be able to engineer thylacines back from DNA they have/find. It would be amazing to bring back so many lost species that are just so amazing in their own right.
I think the biggest thing is:
Will we ever learn?
